News Catch Up May/June 2022

Phew ! It’s been a busy few months for the Dreamcast! With plenty of new release buzz and also developments happening in the background so let’s get started with some particularly exciting stuff, there’s also been translation projects and new VMU mods going on too!

cuphead

First of all is the existence of an early screen of Cuphead – this much loved retro cartoon inspired side scrolling game which has the player shooting from his finger at the various beautifully animated enemies whilst memorising the attack patterns. The graphics were gorgeous for the modern consoles but nobody could foresee the game running on the Dreamcast’s hardware, but that is exactly what has happened – albeit in only a limited nature thus far. You’re able to download the progress of this to play on a real DC console, it’ll be interesting to see if this will continue into a full-blown release with the blessing of the original developers or whether just a proof of concept type scenario, anyway, you can keep a tab on the progress of this promising project over at Dreamcast-talk.com. Thanks to ‘Aionmagan’ and all involved in bringing this to the console.

Next up is the release date for Shadow Gangs! Can you believe that we are nearing the release for this wonderful side scroller action game? Well, in recent days Wave Game Studios have Tweeted saying the game will be released on July 2nd 2022. We are very excited to give this one a try. If you are buying from the USA, VGNYsoft has got you sorted 🙂 Order your copy here :

Speaking of VGNYSoft, they appear to be stocking all of the major Wave Game Studios releases for the Dreamcast so far, with slightly different artwork, these games will set you back $39.99, consisting of Postal, Shadow Gangs, Xenocider and Intrepid Izzy as well as some of the more recent Josh Prod games and a spattering of unique stuff like a limited edition release of RetroGuru’s Hermes which originally released in Europe a few years back and was available at Dragonboxshop. This edition however, comes with a custom green VMU and updated box art, this one is bound to sell out quickly so grab it here where you can also find 240p Suite Tester, a recently released calibration tool which is handy for setting up you Dreamcast to suit your display and capture settings. Next up is The Textorcist. Okay, okay. This isn’t technically ‘new’ but if you ordered the game originally when it launched, you were no doubt aware of the game breaking bugs that plagued the game. Gamefairy were working to get a revised disc out which irradiated these problems which has now been released. I haven’t gone back into the game to check to see if the issues have been resolved, but at the very least, looking around the Internet, I have seen some positivity. If you haven’t claimed your replacement disc yet, head over to GameFairy’s website to claim yours. Conversely, if you haven’t purchased the game yet, it’s still available and will have the updated disc.

Here’s another Wave Game Studios one for you. We’ve been given a hint as to what we can expect moving forward from these guys. As you may know, Wave teased a further spattering of releases for the Dreamcast this year. We already know that Postal has launched as of June 2nd and Shadow Gangs follows on July 2nd but next up is a tournament game for four players, perhaps a re-issue of Alice Dreams Tournament perhaps? Following that will be” a game where you must navigate increasingly more difficult obstacles with near flawless precision”. This could be anything really, but strangely SQRXZ sticks in my mind, but that game is already freeware unless it’s packaged with it’s sequels perhaps but let’s keep in mind that it’s probably something very different! Lastly is “a game where you must match gems to progress to the next level”, there’s been a few games like this that were meant to grace the Dreamcast over the years and a few that had actually been released so it’ll be interesting to see what comes our way, we do know that at least one of these games hasn’t been on the Dreamcast before and was/is a PC title. It would be nice to see Twist It finally make an appearance though!

This last one is particularly huge in my eyes. Regarding the Polymega. The company behind the modular retro gaming console which already allows for Saturn and Megadrive commercial game playback on it’s device have recently stated that they are actively working on getting Dreamcast compatibility! This would be very good news for the independent scene for the console, as we know, each year, more and more Dreamcast consoles die off or have their GD Rom drive replaced for an ODE unit which leads to shrinking sales of physical discs which of course would impact decisions to develop for the console, with the Polymega able to replicate the experience of playing the Dreamcast and it’s discs (even if it’s just the CD-Rom based content) we could see the door continue to be open for both gamers and developers to craft new experiences without the fear of a rapid shrinking market. Of course, GD discs are quite unique and this is most likely to cause Playmaji a headache but something is better than nothing, with all releases for the console in recent years being on CD discs, perhaps a happy medium could be reached here. Currently the team are looking at ways of trying to use the original Dreamcast unit in some way however, it would be awesome to see something totally new.

That’s all for now!

Shadow Gangs Coming June 2022.

First up Shadow Gangs. The successful Kickstarter for this side scrolling adventure game has recently had a shot in the arm in terms of it’s release date with Wave Game Studios now handling the publishing of the game, including the Kickstarter physical reward tier, the PAL blue box variant being included in this, it turns out that we can now expect the game to ship in June of this year, so rather than waiting until the original estimate of 2023, we’ll have the game in our hands this summer!

Screenshot 2022-04-19 at 12.13.22

In other news, Wave Game Studios have announced that there will be an option to purchase PAL style blue box artwork for their games. Starting with Flea, you’ll be able to purchase a front and rear cover in the exact dimensions of the original Euro boxes, so all you need to do is use an existing box and pop your CD and manual in and there we go! One PAL game added to the mix. Wave Game Studios recently stated the sadly they cannot use the original Dreamcast top banner found on later Dreamcast software as there are potential legal issues surround the usage. Wave have said that Flea is the first and not the last time we will see this practice, so hopefully their other published games will follow suit shortly. More news will follow on this in the coming week, in the meantime, head over to their website to indulge in some Sega goodness!

News Catch Up February 2022

Let’s take a little look at some of the happenings on the Dreamcast that you may have missed this month.

First up is Wave Game Studios, these guys have struck a deal with Senile Team and Lowtek Games to distribute some of the back-catalogue of Dreamcast games from yesteryear (well, a couple of years ago..) . Flea! is available for £24.99 which looks to be the same version that was available on Etsy some time ago but is actually a new pressing that not only comes on a proper pressed CD this time ( the initial 200 run was CD-R) but also some little addition features have been added. Grab it here.

Intrepid-Izzy-Limited-Edition

Next up is Intrepid Izzy. This impressive platformer has been out and about for some time now, but Wave have released a special limited PAL packaged version that comes with the music CD in addition to the game disc. There’s only 25 of these available and it’ll be shipped out in March 2022 with a £49.99 price point from this link – don’t miss out folks! You can also order the original style release packaging as well as a Rush Rush Rally Racing Reloaded variant too.

yybii-eu-packshot

Moving away from Senile Team but staying with Wave Games Studio, there’s a totally new game available from these guys retailing at only £19.99. Yeah Yeah Beebiss II is a game from John Riggs that features a very retro aesthetic, channeling 1990’s platforming across 10 levels complete with boss encounters, it all looks pretty wild and can be ordered here.

Good news for those who are awaiting Shadow Gangs, the Kickstarter has been relaunched again for the third and presumably final time, thankfully the goal has been reduced to a far more manageable £25,000 which is a far cry from the over £100,000 that was chucked around in the second round. There’s still plenty of those mighty fine £65 PAL editions left so do your bit and order one, make this game a reality – a lot of work has gone into the Dreamcast port and perhaps Shadow Gangs II would appear one day if this one is funded. Head over here to take a look : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jkmcorp/shadow-gangs-dreamcast-version

FotAQ-cover1

Last up is Flight of the Amazon Queen, the classic point and click adventure game which The Bit Station are carrying over on their website and is being handled by Retro Surge. According to the placeholder page which features tentative artwork, the game should be launching next month for the Dreamcast for $24.99, very reasonable all said and done. Let’s hope this one doesn’t skip it’s launch again like it has in the past. Order yourself a copy here.

News Catchup – December 2021

First off, let’s just get this out of the way; Merry Christmas to all the readers and Dreamcast fans, I hope your 2021 holiday has been filled with the excitement and free-of-drama you wanted.

Let’s catch up on some of the latest Dreamcast news doing the rounds. First up is a new game! We’ll admit, this sort of passed us by but there’s a new title called Driving Strikers coming to the Dreamcast in the near future. This game is quite unique for the console as it’s the first driving and football hybrid we’ve seen on Sega’s machine. If you imagine Rocket League parred back to run on an 128 bit system from 1998, you’re probably on the right lines. There was a recent Christmas demo that was played and recorded for YouTube by Freakdave which you can view here :

Perhaps one of the most innovative independent games to be developed for the console, it shows a tonne of promise, it actually reminds me of Neverball with it’s creative inspiration drawn from an existing franchise. Let’s hope this one gets picked up for release in the next year or so.

Next up is Shadow Gangs, this promising Shinobi style adventure has taken to Kickstarter in need of a rather huge goal to make it a reality on the Dreamcast. The developer had shown off some recently added stretch goal goodness in the form of the PAL blue plastic box, this stretch goal starts at a whopping £100. It does look rather spiffing though. At this time, Shadow Gangs is just over £10,000 of it’s £139,999 (!) goal.

Next up is Andro Dunos 1 + 2. This pair of shooters may very well have escaped your attention since the last batch of Pixelheart releases flooded the market but these two games have been held back until the early part of 2022, probably marking the first two releases of the year. You can order these two as well as the previous JoshProd / Pixelheart back catalogue by clicking below :

Andro Dunos 2 Dreamcast [PAL]

Next up is Watermelon! Remember them? The guys that brought you Pier Solar are back to give you Paprium for the Dreamcast (as well as a host of new systems too) which has now been fully funded, this has been offered in the attention to detail packaging you have come to expect from Watermelon with Euro, USA and Japan style box art being offered as well as a reprint of Pier Solar which has largely been unavailable for a number of years now. Let’s hope that the rocky 5 or so years that hit Watermelon is over and normal service can resume. You should be able to order the Dreamcast releases from Watermelon’s home page.

Did you know that two other Dreamcast games were released in this quarter? Well,  Non Casual Encounter and Ghoul Grind – Night Of The Necromancer are both doing the rounds now, both have a very low print run so if you’re planning on getting a copy, now would be the time. I made a video unboxing both of these cool games and the information of where to order them in in the video bio section :

Last up for this round is my own show that I have created, ‘Locked Out Of Europe’ – being a UK Dreamcast collector, there’s loads of games that were never released here and I want to cover some of them on YouTube to see how easy they are to play and obtain today, I’ve started with Baldr Force EXE as I received this for Christmas this year, but I have hundreds of games I would like to cover, you’ll have to excuse the video issues, my equipment wasn’t playing nicely but this is just the start and I aim to improve over time, exposing games for our favourite system, join me on the journey!

Until next year! Stay safe.

October News Round Up. Paprium! JoshProd! Shadows Gangs!

Happy Halloween to all those spooky players out there, we hope you’ve got one of the many survival horror games for the Dreamcast to entertain you today. If you havent, perhaps you’re in the market for some new software to which, we’ve got some reports of bits and pieces for you to feast upon.

E9i-caiXoAIe6WS

First up, it’s the end of October so JoshProd and Pixelheart have began throwing out the next phase of Dreamcast releases, starting with the NTSC style games and the PAL case variants releasing a week or so after (November) These games consist of :

Alice Sisters

Rocketron

Satazius Next

Super Charged Robot Valkaiser

Tough Guy

Wolf Flame

What a list folks! It’s worth noting that Andro Dunos 1 & 2 will be launching in the first half of 2022 and aren’t considered to be in the same ‘phase’ as these above games.

Moving on. If you’ve purchased The Texorcist, you may have noticed that the game crashes at set points when text is displayed via the story. Thankfully HeadUp and Gamefairy have been working on an updated disc which should be pressed very soon. Make sure you get in touch with them to arrange your replacement. You can see what we thought of that game here :

October and November is set to be quite busy in the Dreamcast scene with two Kickstarters incoming. The first of these is the stretch goal for Watermelon Games’ Paprium, which first showed up on the Megadrive in the last part of 2020 after a lengthy development period of around 8 years or so. Watermelon have faced plenty of criticism in the past few years but their Kickstarter campaign to bring Paprium to other formats seems to be a roaring success and we wish them all the best with delivering on their ambition without PayPal’s intervention. Paprium will be available in both a standard and limited edition which comes with a whole host of goodies. The standard release will be available in region specific packaging like Pier Solar, Watermelon’s first Dreamcast release. Watermelon have promised a custom experience for Paprium on the Dreamcast which include a native 3 player mode as well as VMU functionality. You can back the project now by clicking here

The second Kickstarter set to launch in the later part of November is Shadow Gangs. You may remember this game which has been in development for a good few years and launched on the PC and PS4 in recent times. Thankfully the team held good on their word that a Dreamcast version would be coming, this version is set to compromise very little from the more powerful format versions and is said to be very impressive so well worth staying tuned on this one!

You want to see the Dreamcast version running right? Look no further !
